About Kent...
A brief history of Kent Armstrong: In the early 1970's, Kent got his start rewinding pickups in his father, Dan Armstrong's New York City repair shop. Eventually, Kent took over the repair shop and added a partner: pickup designer Bill Lawrence. With Bill's help, Kent continued his accumulation of pickup knowledge, and it was at this time that he started building his first pickups. After moving to England to attend college, Kent opened a rewind and repair shop and started designing new ways to manufacture his own line of pickups. Today, Kent is one of the foremost pickup designers in the industry, and years of listening to what the customer wanted to hear has culminated in the WD pickup line. With his designs for WD, as well as his handmade pickups, Kent still has one goal in mind: To give every player their dream sound. Interview (The Full Story) Q: How did you get started working with pickups?
A: "Late summer 1971 saw a total change of everything. Dan closed the shop in New York and moved to London. I had just graduated from High School and Dan offered to put my brother and I through college in England, so off we set. I went to college for three years and during this period I continued my work on pickups. When I finished college I started a courier service riding motorcycles. I was going in and out of London two or three times a day so I was able to offer a 24 hour turn around time for the London shops on pickup repairs. In the courier business there is a lot of sitting around waiting for work so I started to design my own pickups. My first design was known as the "Z+". I started custom work and designs and due to my unique production methods I am able to produce a personal design and sound for my customers without the need for excessive tooling costs." Q: Your work has become known world-wide, and in the past few years your pickups have found their way onto the guitars of some great performers. What changes has this industry acceptance brought you? A: "This has lead to some of the top guitar and bass builders around the world using my hand made pickups. Nearly all of the top jazz guitar builders in America offer my pickups on their guitars as an option. A few years ago I was approached by Dong Ho Electronics. They asked me to design and launch a new range of pickups for them. This was very convenient for me because the demand for my pickups was rapidly increasing. As I can only produce 3,000 hand made pickups and about 1,000 rewinds per year, an alternative product was very attractive. This new venture with Dong Ho Electronics enables us to supply a well designed and manufactured pickup at a very reasonable price. We can also manufacture enough pickups to satisfy the mass world wide sales demand, handled by WD Music Products, Inc. WD and I have these new pickups on some of the top ranges of guitars in the world, and expect our clientele to keep expanding. 1995 marked my 25th year with pickups. I would say that I've seen and repaired just about every pickup that has ever been made, with the exception of any Chinese pickups. Do they make any?" |
"I understand that everything
is a matter of taste and style but these pickups are possibly the most
versatile and underrated
pickups out there. I build instruments for a living and I'm very picky
about what I put in my instruments. Really, I can't say enough about
these pickups!!" User review from Harmony-Central.com User reviews are the opinions of the reviewers and not those of Harmony-Central.com |
